But today, I&#8217;m going to talk to you about something you can&#8217;t see, what&#8217;s going on up in that \uff08\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\uff09 brain of hers.<br \/>\nThe modern \uff08\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\uff09 of neuroscience are demonstrating to us that what&#8217;s going on up there is nothing short of rocket science. And what we&#8217;re learning is going to shed some light on what the romantic writers and \uff08\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\uff09 described as the &#8220;celestial openness&#8221; of the child&#8217;s mind.<br \/>\nWhat we see here is a mother in India and she&#8217;s speaking Koro, which is a newly discovered language. And she&#8217;s talking to her baby. What this mother and the 800 people who speak Koro in the world understand that, to \uff08\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\uff09 this language, they need to speak it to the babies. And therein lies a \uff08\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\uff09 puzzle. Why is it that you can&#8217;t preseve a language by speaking to you and I, to the adults? Well, it&#8217;s got to do with your brain.<br \/>\nWhat we see here is that language has a critical period for learning. The way to read this slide is to look at your age on the \uff08\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\uff09 axis. You&#8217;ve done that. And you&#8217;ll see on the vertical your skill at acquiring a second language. And babies and children are \uff08\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\uff09 until they turn seven and then there&#8217;s a systematic decline. After puberty, we fall off the map.<\/font><br \/>\n\u77e5\u3089\u306a\u3044\u5358\u8a9e\u304c\u51fa\u3066\u304d\u3066\u3082\u3001\u7126\u3089\u306a\u3044\u3067\u304f\u3060\u3055\u3044\u306d\u3002<br
